To strengthen her position in Brexit negotiations with the European Union, Theresa May announced in April that an early general election would take place on June 8th. The results, however, are not what she had hoped for, with no single party winning an overall majority in the House of Commons and the Tories losing a total of 12 seats.
Political uncertainty will now increase, with May already facing calls for her resignation. She chose to focus the Conservative campaign on her leadership abilities, but analysts across the spectrum agreed that her performance was lacklustre, leaving the field open for a resurgent Labour Party to make significant gains. Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, buoyed after winning an additional 31 seats, said this morning: “She wanted a mandate. Well, the mandate she’s got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence. I would have thought that is enough for her to go”.
In the United Kingdom, a party must win at least 326 seats out of a total of 650 in the House of Commons to form a parliamentary majority. Britain now faces a hung parliament for the 5th time in its history, which would make the legislative process fraught with difficulty, and whilst the Conservatives might be able to govern without a majority, a coalition led by Corbyn could yet emerge.

Pound Plummets
The GBP/USD currency pair fell to its lowest level since mid-April, as sterling dropped more than 2% in the immediate aftermath of the results. Market volatility looks set to continue and traders are anxiously awaiting further developments.
What about Brexit?
A hung parliament would put more pressure on the markets, with critical Brexit negotiations about to begin. The kind of deal to be agreed between the UK and the European Union is now more uncertain than ever. Each party has a completely different view on the nature of the future relationship between Britain and the EU, and many experts are interpreting the results as reducing the possibility of a hard Brexit.
The rights of European citizens living in the UK and of UK citizens living in the EU, cross-border security deals, the allocation of unspent funds, the closure and relocation of European agencies based in the UK and numerous other issues will all be on the table at the upcoming negotiations. Of primary concern is the degree of access to the Single Market that the UK will get in terms of goods, services, people and business regulations.
